The Ithaca Model 37 is one of the original classic shotguns along with the Remington Models 31, and 870, and the Winchester Models 1897 and 1912. It was based on a 1915 patent by the famous John M. Browning, initially marketed as the Remington Model 17. Introduced in 1937, the 37 was an immediate hit in part due to the nature of its operation. Unlike most pump shotguns which eject shells to the side, the 37 ejected its spent shells downward through the same port shells were manually loaded into the magazine from. This enabled both left and right-handed shooters to operate the 37 with equal ease, without the former having to deal with empty shells hitting them in the face. The Deerslayer Deluxe model featured a walnut stock and forearm with cut checkering, light receiver engraving, and a smoothbore barrel (modified choke) with rifle style sights. In this example, the gun retains the original front sight with its translucent orange insert, making it easy to see at dawn or dusk. The rear sight system includes scope mounting points for the scope rings to clamp down on. It obvious from the pictures that this shotgun has been used for hunting. There are small spots of pitting on the barrel and a few scratches to the stock. None of these affect the 37’s performance in the field. The bore is in excellent condition. The 37 also comes with a spare, cylinder choke 26-inch barrel. It features an orange bead for the same reason as the Deerslayer barrel. According to research, the serial number indicates this example was manufactured in 1977. Considering what this shotgun has been used for since then, it is in good condition and would make an excellent hunting weapon. The Model 37 was found to be reliable in even the worst of conditions and was utilized by the U.S. military in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. They also seen extensive use with law enforcement. As a testament to the 37’s popularity and quality, over two million have been produced since introduced, and it is still in production!
