Fine Antique SHARPS & HANKINS .32 Pepperbox Pistol

Largest Variant in .32 Caliber

Here we present an antique Sharps & Hankins Model 3B Pepperbox Pistol, made circa 1866 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Christian Sharps invented his famously large bore, breech-loading rifle in 1848, after practicing gun-making under John Hall at Harpers Ferry Armory. In 1859, he premiered another unique design in the 4-barreled pepperbox pistol with a unique revolving firing pin, made for 19th Century concealed carry. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. This gave Sharps a leg up in the market since everyone else either had to produce single shot pistols, come up with an alternate ammunition and weapon design, or just stick with percussion until the patent expired. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th Century conceal and carry.

Only about 2,000 of these Model 3Bs were made in total, making it a rare gun. It is chambered in .32 rimfire short, with only the Model 4 series, chambered in .32 rimfire long, surpassing it in firepower. This gun is still very concealable, but has more grip to hold onto, and more firepower compared to the many thousands of .22 versions that were produced.

The overall condition is fine. About 40% of the original high polish blue is present on the barrel cluster. The markings are clear. The smooth grips are also fine, showing very little wear. The bores are very good. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .32 rimfire short

Bore is in very condition and the firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a fantastic example of a scarce Sharps pepperbox.
