DA-004-W-(10374)-CHA-U.S. MODEL 1906 CAVALRY SABER, an exact copy of the Model 1860 Cavalry Saber of Civil War fame. Continual development of this saber after the Civil War took several forms, from making them even lighter and thinner and smaller (such as the Model 1870 series) until someone at the turn of the last century got the bright idea that the cavalry needed a heavier fighting saber, and went right back to the old M1860 in all its dimensions, changing only the handguard in that they made it from iron instead of brass, in keeping with the adoption of olive drab fatigue uniforms, retiring the old army blues. The leather wrapping around the wooden handle was also turned to brown leather instead of black, but the braided grip wire remained the same, brass. These are quite scarce today, because just after this, the Patton Saber was developed, and quickly adopted, being radically different from the old M1860 design. This nice clean specimen of the 1906 is marked “A.S. Co.”, over an ordnance bomb figure, and the date, 1906. The opposite side is marked US over JC. The 35” blade is bright steel, retains army grease on it. Very good used condtion, tight, overall length 41”. No scabbard, it still retains the leather grip grommet. All original, as-is.
