DA-0012-L-(7566)-EBE- U.S. Model 1840 CAVALRY SABER, the rare “wrist breaker” of pre-Civil War vintage. Stamped at recasso, “U.S.”, and “A.D.K.” on one side, and on the other, the maker, “AMES MFG. CO.”, “CABOTVILLE”, and, “1850.” Later cavalry sabers were marked with the Chicopee Falls, Mass. Address, but only 2500 of these earlier dragoon swords were made at their alternate location, in Cabotville, and so marked. That’s what makes this specimen rare and desirable to collectors. That Cabotville address! The wood grip is intact with its leather wrapping, but much of the twisted brass wire of the grip is missing (with enough intact to easily replicate and restore it.) The 35 ½ “steel blade is in brown patina, no pitting and no nicks in the cutting edge, length from pommel to point, 41” Point is fully intact. Fine brass mountings and original steel scabbard with no dents, though it is missing the slotted throat, but fits nice and snug anyway. This model is the ancestor of the M1863 cavalry saber of the Civil War, a lighter weight design, and although many 1840 models were issued for the Civil War, they were quickly exchanged for the lighter 1863. Overall length, sheathed, 43”. All Original, as-is.
