Description: Up for Auction is a Used, Inland MFG. U.S. M1 30 Paratrooper Carbine. Appraised at 90-95% as follows: Optics / Sight: Fixed front sight marked with .U.(Manufactured by Underwood), Rear sight is adjustable (Marked with IR Co for IBM) MFG Date: Barrel Date is not evident Stock: THe lower stock is of black walnut, standard raw linseed finish as is the upper forearm. This stock was manufactured by S.E. Overton of South Haven, Mi.. The steel wire component stock appears to have been manufactured by them late in the war after their acquisition of the tooling and machinery from the Royal Typewriter Co, inc. of Hartford, Ct. The correct mark appears on cast steel buttplate. However, the wood is not marked nor is the military proofing apparent on the stock above the handgrip; indicating that the stock is of the period replacements that were manufactured without markings or is one that was added by an overseas rebuild administered by the U.S. OrdinanceDepartment, ie, either in Korea or by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium. THese stocks that were applied during the occupation periods were not allowed to be marked if done in a foreign rebuild Center The stock on this particular firearm is in the Very good condition with two minor scratches or dings. The leather cheek guard is not corrupted. The rivets are of the later steel type. The oiler is missing Grade 90% Frame: THe frame of the firearm or in the case of the M1 carbine, the reciever group, is in very good condition. THe manufacturer's stamp under the rear sight is that of the Inland Mfg. Division of General Motors. THer receiver retains most of it's finish. the Bolt is of the square type. Grade 95% Barrel: The barrel is stamped with the imprint of Inland Mfg. Div. General Motors. The exterior of the barrel is very crisp and exhibits 95% of it's original finish. The small "p" proof mark appears just forward f the bayonet lug on top of the barrel. (This mark was applied only after 1951) It is ounted with the type III Bayonet lugged barrel band. The bore is excellent. Grade 95% Action and Mechanical condition: Mechanics and action are operational as new. The trigger group is in very good condition. The magazine release button is the type III series and so marked with the capital M. The safety is of the type IV or toggle group. Grade 90% Accoutrements: Sling is marked and dated 1944 and is of the correct type for the firearm. THe gun is accompanied by a GI carbine case marked US without manufacurers markings on the inside and appears to be post war. Grade 85% Additional Notes: Early in 1942, the United States Army recognized a need for a shorter version of the M1 carbine that would be compatible with paratroops, air crewman, tankers, and other troops moving in confined quarters. A manufacturer's request for model submissions was issued and Inland Manufacturing Division along with the two other manufacturers submitted drawings. Inland's design was chosen and the approval for the final design of a folding stock model of the carbine issued on May 12, 1942. Interestingly, the patent was finally approved in 1946. Referred to as the mode M!A!, the "paratrooper carbine" entered production. Assembly consisted of utilizing the standard M1 carbine parts but with them mounted in a foulding black walnut and steel frame stock. Therefore, all of the same markings as the standard carbine apply with the exception of stock markings. The serial number are intermingled with the standard carbine production numbers. As to this particular firearm, even though the reciever's serial number falls into the earlier production category [II], the remainder of the firearm indicates a later assembly period. Modern findins illustrate that some carbines fitted with the type III bayonet lug were issued to combat troops in 1945. Valued at $2800 This is a great looking and in great shape gun. Please contact us if there are any questions. Good Luck!!!
