Replica (?) “Colt” 1878 Double Action (“DA") revolver in .44-40 WCF (“Frontier Six Shooter”) with hard rubber grips and blue finish. The origin of this piece is a puzzle. Although this revolver bears only Colt markings and the serial number dates from Colt's 1894 production range, this revolver just plain looks too “new” to be that old. It is in NRA (Modern) Excellent condition except for a chip in the right grip panel and a missing lanyard ring. It may be a replica although it bears no obvious non-Colt maker's, proof, or import stamps. Or not. Ships with “Triple-K” brand military style, black leather flap holster. Great price on a modern example of Colt's first large-frame double action revolver!

The model 1878 DA was Colt's first large-frame double-action revolver, and, as such, it closely resembles its more famous cousin, the 1873 Colt Single Action Army (SAA) revolver and the earlier small frame “Lightning” and “Thunderer” double actions. Manufactured from 1878 to 1905 (over 51,000 total), the 1878's most distinguishing feature is that it is double action, meaning that it was capable of "trigger cocking" and fast firing. The standard finishes were blue/case colored and nickel with hard rubber "bird's head" grips. The 1878 DA is also well known for having a very delicate action, and very few are found today with fully working actions. Consequently, this (possible facsimile) specimen is particularly interesting: its powerful action has a strong and robust DA mode although the hammer cannot be thumb cocked (no SA mode). The original 1878 DA packed a punch and was popular both in the US West, Britain, and world-wide in various colonial wars (Boer, Phillipines) in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This specimen is priced to move, so act fast!

This type Colt-1878-DA type revolver has a 7 1/2" barrel and a 5-digit serial number (s/n 33/952 on two lines, part of Colt's 1884 serial range) on the butt. The last three digits of the serial are repeated on the rear of the cylinder adjacent to a single “V”. A single “2” is stamped on the left front strut of the trigger guard, and a small, circular “Rampant Colt” logo is located on the lower left frame just behind the trigger guard. The only other markings on the metal are a 1-line address (“COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO HARTFORD CT. USA”) on the top of the barrel and the designation (“COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER”) on the left side of the barrel. Both stampings are even, deep, and crisp. Colt used the “Frontier Six Shooter” designation to indicate a .44-40 chambering, and, indeed, the muzzle and backs of the chambers micrometer at approximately 0.42 in and 0.47 in, respectively. Sights are a basic V notch in the top strap (rear) and prominent Colt SAA - type front sight blade. The gloss finish, including hammer and trigger is deep, rich, midnight blue. The brown grips are hard rubber or plastic and carry the “Rampant Colt” logo at the top of each panel. The 1878's action is fairly rudimentary compared with modern DA revolvers. Lacking cylinder notches and a bolt, it relies only on the hand to turn the cylinder and for cylinder lock-up. The cylinder pin is secured using Colt's spring loaded cross pin set up. The ejector and loading gate assembly are the same as the classic Colt SAA design, except flatter with an opening stud. The butt is fitted for a swivelling lanyard ring, which is missing from this specimen. The included “Triple K” brand belt holster is a black leather reproduction military style unit with “US” embossed on its flap. It is slightly undersize for this revolver. Great add to an old-west collection!!

Part of an estate liquidation, this Colt-1878-DA-type revolver is in NRA (Modern) Excellent condition with its blue finish rated at 98%, still deep, rich, and glossy. Only some of the sharp edges (muzzle tip, cylinder front, etc) show any trace of shinyness, and the blue on the internal contact surface of the cylinder pin has thinned. The flats and contours are remarkably free of scratches and handling marks. The only metal dings noted are three small scuffs, one in the top-strap V-notch, one on the bottom of the forward strut of the trigger guard, and one near the 2nd line of the serial number on the butt. Most stampings are bold and crisp, only the small “Rampant Colt” logo on the lower left side of the frame showing slight uneveness. The bore and cylinders are in bright, excellent condition. If the gun has been fired, it has been fired but very little based on the bore and the condition of the top strap behind the forcing cone, which has no fouling build up. In DA mode, the action is strong and positive. The trigger smoothly advances and precisely indexes the cylinder and then drops the hammer with authority. There is almost no end-shake in the cylinder and side-to-side play is about 1/16”. There is no SA mode or ½ cock notch, and the revolver can not be thumb cocked. The main condition point noted is on the lower back of the right grip panel, which has a large chip missing next to the back-strap. Otherwise the grips are in Excellent condition. The lanyard ring and stud are also missing from the hole in the lower butt strap. The holster is clean and in Excellent condition. A great deal. Don't miss!
