COMMENTS: This is one of the most desirable and rarest rifle made by the Japanese Empire. This rifle was used to pressure test Ammunition in the factory. This rifle has the serial number 3. The only examples that we have seen were in a museum. From what we have seen through research on the web and with the Honeycutt book "Military Rifles of Japan", only about 50-58 of these were made and only 10-15 have survived. Most of them are museum pieces. Because this was probably in a factory, it is really amazing that it survived the American bombing raids. This particular rifle has a very nice blued finish. We would characterize the bluing is near 95%+. The stock is rough cut and in great shape. There are no dings that we can see, but again, the wood is rough cut. The finish is original on the wood and has not been altered. The rifle has the screw on top. The bolt does not bear a number. The bolt face looks great and looks close to unfired. The barrel is 32" long from where the receiver meets the pressure test area to the end of the barrel. The barrel has 2 tapering areas near the end of the barrel. The first taper is 2 1/4" from the crown and the second taper is 1 3/4" from the crown. The barrel does have some very light surface rust but the bluing can clearly be seen under it. We did not clean the barrel but do not believe it has rifling. It is not chrome lined. The side of the receiver shows a manufacture marking of Tokyo without a serial number. The top of the receiver does not have a mum, but it has the serial number 3.
