This is a wide blade British bayonet for a large smooth bore musket. The socket and blade are in great shape, and appear to have minimal rust or patina. The dark on the socket appears to be from the heat during manufacturing. The blade has the original edge, and has not been sharpened. There is a false edge on the top of the blade. Really in outstanding condition for its age. The dimensions can be seen in the pictures.

There has been some question on exact designation, and if there is a British blade collector out there who can assist, it would be appreciated. The consensus here is that it is an 1843 British Sappers and Minors bayonet. However, the blade diameter is smaller than what is found in the books, and we thought it might be a typo. One alternate identification is that its a 1795 British Volunteer Bayonet. There were a number of different variations, but measurements here are not exact either. Either way, a great early English bayonet!
