ARISAKA TYPE 44 “CALVARY CARBINE” FIRST VARIATION, made and issued prior to and during WW II, JAPANESE BOLT ACTION SHORT RIFLE. A scarce Bolt Action Carbine with some unique features, designed for use by cavalry and special troops. Overall length 38", barrel length 19.2”, weight 7.3 lb., capacity 5 rounds, caliber 6.5 Jap (6.5 x 50), capacity 5 rounds, effective range 400 yd.

HISTORY: The first Japanese-designed military rifles appeared in the 1880's, followed in 1897 by Colonel Arisaka Nariakira's first design, the Type 30 rifle. The Type 30 and subsequent Arisaka rifles were functionally very similar to the rifles designed by the famed Paul Mauser. The Type 44 Carbine was designed in response to a need for mounted troops to have an overall shorter rifle than the infantry versions, plus to have a bayonet available without need for another piece of gear hanging from the belt. The Type 44 was adopted in 1912 (in the Japanese Imperial calendar the 44th year of the Meiji Period) and was in production until 1942. Approximately 92,000 Type 44 Carbines were manufactured, and many were in use prior to WW II in Japan’s conquest of China and Korea.

CONDITION OF THIS TYPE 44 IS VERY GOOD with a good bore: not shiny but with sharp lands and grooves. The stock possibly has been lightly sanded and varnished by a previous owner. Bluing on metal components varies from very good on receiver and bayonet to almost non-existent on the trigger guard/magazine floor plate, which have a gray/brown patina. This is seen on a lot of Type 44’s—possibly something to do with different steel alloys taking the bluing differently. There is no visible pitting (I have never removed the action/barrel from the stock) except spots of light pitting on the unblued buttplate. The wood shows small scuffs, dents, and scratches but overall is very good for its age. There is moderate shrinkage separation between the upper and lower buttstock halves. The “mum” is ground with the outline remaining. No serial numbers on this Type 44 are matching, which is not surprising considering this Carbine’s age and long service history. The folding bayonet and buttstock trapdoor for the cleaning rods function as they should, although the buttstock door is tight. The 2-piece cleaning rod is missing, sorry. This Carbine has been equipped with a repro leather sling. The characteristics which determine this is a First Variation are: 2 separate holes bored in the buttstock for the cleaning rod sections (rather than one larger hole), and the comparatively short fitting that mounts the bayonet to the fore-end of the stock. The serial number of the receiver (with no series symbol) and the arsenal marking indicate this Carbine was produced at the Koishikawa (Tokyo) Arsenal between 1911 and 1933. There are no import markings on this rifle. I have never fired this Carbine, but the action, bolt, trigger, and safety appear to operate correctly. Therefore, I do NOT guarantee that this Rifle is shootable. If the Buyer chooses to fire this Carbine, it is strongly urged that a competent Gunsmith check the Carbine first.

INSPECTION PERIOD IS 5 DAYS FROM THE DATE RIFLE IS RECEIVED by your dealer. If this Rifle does not meet your expectations or you believe it was misrepresented in some way, you may return it for full refund of purchase price and the shipping cost you paid me. Buyer MUST ship it within 5 days of receipt at your dealer, carefully packaged against damage. I will not refund your cost to ship it back to me, nor any costs applied by your dealer or authorities where you reside for processing the transfer, background check, etc. There are 3 conditions: Rifle must not be fired. No disassembly beyond normal field stripping is permitted. Rifle must come back in same condition as when it was shipped to Buyer. There is NO other warranty, either express or implied.

LEGAL: This Rifle will only be sold and shipped in compliance with all applicable Federal and State laws. It must be shipped to a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer (FFL) of your choosing, can also be shipped to a Type 3 FFL holder. It is your responsibility to insure I receive a legible signed copy of your dealer’s license before the firearm can be shipped. You may obtain and mail a copy with your payment or have the dealer email a copy to me. A few licensed dealers will not accept shipment of a firearm from an individual such as myself. If your dealer does not accept firearms shipped from individuals, it will be necessary for me to have my local dealer ship to your dealer, and there will be an extra $30 charge for my dealer’s service.

RESTRICTIONS: It is also YOUR responsibility to know whether it is legal in your place of residence for you to buy and own this firearm. If you don’t know, ask your local dealer. I am not a dealer or lawyer and it is NOT my responsibility to determine this for you. Finally, if you are a CALIFORNIA resident, do not even bother bidding. Your state would require me to submit personal information and would keep it in a data-base like criminal records, just for exercising my Constitutional Rights to sell a personally-owned firearm. NO, THANKS!

PAYMENT: Payment must be made by United States Postal Money Order. Reason, it is simply the only type of money order or other non-currency payment that can be immediately verified as being legitimate, not a counterfeit. NO Paypal--they hate your Firearms Rights, and no knowledgeable gun owner should use their services. I must receive your full payment and FFL information within 10 days of the closing of the auction.

SHIPPING: This Rifle will be shipped via UPS, carefully packaged against damage, insured for the full purchase price, for $40, except for Alaska and Hawaii. Shipping cost to those states will be determined and billed at cost.

ETHICAL: As gun owners, WE ALL have the responsibility to own and use our firearms in a safe and legal manner. Your bid on this firearm is your agreement to follow accepted safe gun handling practices and comply with Constitutionally-compliant legal requirements of your area. Seller accepts no responsibility or liability should Buyer fail to do so.
