This Antique Officer’s Field Lap Desk has Decorative Brass Corners on the top; and with two Brass Bands across each corner of the box. The top has a blank Brass Nameplate for engraving that measures approx. 3-1/4 x 1-3/4 inches. In addition, there is a Working Lock and Key with a Brass Shield Escutcheon on the front side.

This finished Walnut wood box measures approx. 14” long x 9-1/4” wide x 5-3/4” high in the closed position; and measures 18-1/4” long in the open position.

The lid is raised on two brass hinges (replacements), one in each corner. When opened there is an upper and lower writing surface. The upper section lifts when a small brass lever is moved to expose a writing paper compartment underneath.

The lower section contains a hidden compartment beneath the pens and ink tray. Under this tray is a spring loaded panel which reveals 2 small secret drawers; it is accessed when you pull up on the wood block latch in the left square of the tray.

All the brass has an aged patina; the felt cloth is a replacement. The brass bands have minor spotting, no rust or pitting (polish should remove). On the bottom is a closed horizontal crack running across its surface. All other wood, both exterior and interior, is solid and in very good condition; exhibiting minor nicks and bruises consistent with age and usage.

In all, a handsome Civil War Officer’s Field Lap Desk that contains a hidden compartment and a Working Lock and Key. A solid collectible and a great display piece.
