We recently came across a handful of these old shipping crates. They are extremely scarce and, as far as I know, have never been available enywhere else for sale. They are marked Winchester Repeating Arms Co., New Haven, Conn., U.S.A. and are sized to fit single rifles. These are the crates that were used by Winchester for railway shipments in the 1800s through the 1920s. They are made of dark, knotty cedar and show a rich age patina throughout. The old style rough sawn marks are visible on both the outside and inside and they have that specific scent that only comes from first generation solid cedar. Winchester used cedar crates to ship rifles because it naturally repels moisture and helps to prevent rust and corrosion. They show some old storage wear but overall are in excellent condition. They appear to be old stock that has never been used. There is a cutout on the inside to fit the rifle's muzzle end and they will fit most all wincehser pre 64 lever action rifles. Models 1873, 1894, 1892 fit comfortably in both rifle and carbine configurations as well as model 1876 and 1886 in carbine lengths. The approximate outside dimensions are 44.5" x 8.5" x 4.5" in height. There are a few larger ones that should fit a model 1886 or 1876 in rifle length. There are only a handful of these available and once there are gone, there are no more. This is an extremely rare item FREE SHIPPING IN THE USA IWill Ship Internationally But International Customer Pays Actual Shipping Charges To His or Her Country!!! Tks for looking Dennis
