1880s Pre-Revolution Russian Silver Vodka Cup ANTIQUE

You are viewing an Original Antique Pre-Revolutionary Cloisonné Enameled Silver Vodka Cup with Moscow Hallmarks. The overall appearance and condition of this 53mm tall cup would rate as very fine to excellent. It weighs 43.2 grams. The cup is decorated overall with three repeating floral patterns, separated from each other by three diagonal rows of light blue enamel dots.

While there are several minor points where the enamel bubbled during the firing process, leaving tiny holes hardly larger than pinpoints, there is only one area of actual physical damage on the entire cup: a place near the lip where a small piece of light blue enamel is missing. With the exception of only one or two holes that are slightly larger than the rest, the average person would need a magnifying lens to spot most of the "pin points". It should also be noted that, as sometimes happens with cloisonné, the enamel did not completely flow into (and fill) one or two very tiny areas during the firing process.

There are three hallmarks on the bottom of the cup, the largest one indicates Moscow (the Greek "delta" character behind the kokoshnik head) as the city of origin and identifies the silver content as sterling (84). Two other hallmarks repeat the silversmith's initials as "P B" (both marks are in Cyrillic; the smaller one of the two is in italicized Cyrillic), which identifies him as Peter Baskakov, a silversmith working in Moscow from 1883 to 1908. Examples of his work are in the State Historical Museum on Red Square. (The use of two different punches to show the initials was probably not common.)

Multi-colored enameling on Russian silver always has an immediate, positive impact on the viewer whenever it is encountered - and this cup's impression is no exception!
