For auction is an original Winchester 1873 3rd model, lever action rifle, with a 26" octagon barrel in 44-40 caliber. The bore is exceptional for its age with slight clouding on the surface, but no pits. It sports a crescent butt plate with storage compartment that has a sliding door on it. The brass shell lifter has 44 cal. on it as well as the two letters AE. Could be someone's initials. The top cover slides nicely and the sights are complete. Stockset matches the good condition of the metal parts very nicely with a few scratches in the walnut. There are no cracks or chips that I can find. The barrel and receiver are freckled, but the finish is sound with wear on the sharp edges of the barrel. The top is marked 44 Cal just in front of the receiver. Also marked "Winchester's Repeating Arms" and "King's-Improvement", along with address and patent information. I have not shot it but it functions properly. This is a very well cared for piece. I think I might even see a little case color on the left side of the lever if I squint hard enough. This interesting rifle comes with the rare 44-40 caliber in an octagon barrel to make it a really desirable addition to any collection. Shipping is $50 to your ffl.
