German WW2 Early Production Air Gunner/Wireless Operator Badge + Etui

For your viewing is a German WW2 Early Production Air Gunner/Wireless Operator Badge.

Handsome, Early Production Air Gunner/Wireless Operator Badge (Fliegerschützenabzeichen für Bordfunker) by BPNL - this is a beautiful, early version of this badge.

It was intended to be awarded to Air Gunners, Radio Operators and Mechanics who successfully completed two months of training in one of the positions, in a minimum of five operational flights. The badge could have been awarded should the recipient be wounded on an operational flight.

It depicts a Luftwaffe eagle in flight, clutching in its claws a pair of arrow headed lightning bolts, surrounded by a wreath of half laurel leaves and half oak leaves. It is produced in tombak, and has crisp details with little to no wear. The nickel silver finish has toned ever so slightly, giving this a truly handsome look.

It is obviously of a high quality! The original, darkened finish to the eagle is mostly missing from the obverse, but visible on the reverse and in the lower recesses of the obverse. The reverse features a barrel hinge (mounted directly to the badge) with a fairly thick, round needle pin (which is a bit crooked but works just fine!).

The round wire catch is “C” shaped, and soldered directly to the badge. The (tombak) hardware is missing most of the finish but the pin retains all of its original silver finish. The eagle is nice and tight, exhibiting no wiggle. A great example of this handsome badge!
