Another "No Reserve" Penny Auction from Dust 2 Dollars.
Fine Estate & Consignment Firearms!

This auction is for a Thai Type 46/66 Mauser rifle chambered in 8x52mmR. These are a very interesting version of the 98 Mauser rifles as you can see. This one has an excellent bore with no issues. I removed the action from the stock and there are no surprises there. The metal on the barrel retains almost all of the bluing with no issues. The receiver is the same with a nice crisp crest. We have shown all of the markings including a hand scribed serial number that is the number that will be used for the transfer which is also written on the stock. There are NO IMPORT markings on the rifle! The stocks show marks and dings as you can see in all the full sized high resolution pictures below with no cracks or repairs. There is a painted number of "77" on the butt stock which might be a rack number. The sliding butt trap door works just fine and there was nothing hiding in there. A large number of these were converted to 45-70 and other projects but not this one. It is a fine example of a Type 46/66 rifle that is getting harder and harder to find.

This Mauser rifle came to life when Siam (now known as Thailand) was one of the few independent South Asian nations around the turn century. Wanting to modernize its military to protect against colonial imposition, they decided in 1903 to adopt a copy of the Mauser Gewehr 98 rifle. Siam didn’t have the manufacturing base to produce the necessary quantity of rifles they estimated they would need. They contracted with the Japanese and the rifles were completed at the Koishikawa arsenal in Tokyo. Between 1903 and 1908 about 400,000 of these rifles were manufactured and chambered for the old-style 8x50R cartridge that had a round-nosed bullet. This was called the Type 46 rifle. The later cartridge that was adopted was the 8x52mmR "Spitzer" cartridge and became the “Type 66.” These ammunition designations have led to a lot of confusion with collectors. Since the type 66 rifles were manufactured a year after the 8x52mmR cartridge was adopted. When the Type 66 cartridge appeared many Type 46 rifles were re-chambered and are therefore known as “Type 46/66” which is the version this auction is for! The conversion is easy to identify since it involved shaving down the rear sight ramps to work accurately with the flatter-shooting caliber.
This Mauser served as a strong symbol that Siam would not surrender to Western pressure. In WWII the Type 46 and 46/66 rifles saw active combat against both Axis and Allied forces. They were first used against the French in bids to reclaim long lost territory and briefly against the invading Japanese forces. Over their long service lives these rifles saw repeated refurbishment and rifles with all matching assembly numbers are unheard of, especially after the re-chambering process.
Markings found on the Type 46 are beautiful and rarely make much sense to the U.S. collector. The symbol at the center of the receiver is the Chakram, from which the Chakri Dynasty takes its name. Inside the chakram is a depiction of a traditional Siamese crown, although this is often hard to make out with the naked eye. The markings below this almost always translated to “R.S. 121. On the left side of the receiver, under the dust cover, you can find the Koishikawa Arsenal’s “stacked cannonballs”. At the rear of the receiver, stamped into the bridge, you can find the serial number in Siam numerals.
