Urban Legends on Gun Control Bills Continue to Surface
It seems urban legends about new gun-control bills are continuing to surface. The latest fallacy to cause concern is a bill, "SB 2099," that would allegedly require gun owners to list their firearms on their tax documents (and pay upward of $50 per gun owned).

There is no such bill. Also generating talk is HR 45, The Blair Holt Act. Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), HR 45 calls for, amongst other things, all handgun owners to submit to the federal government a formal application including: photo identification, fingerprints, medical and mental health records and a completed written firearm safety examine.

The legislation also mandates that a federal database be established of all firearm sales and transfers. Though this legislation is real and NSSF is continuing to monitor it, industry and gun owners should not be concerned. HR 45 has no co-sponsors and is not a threat to become law.

AFTE: Study Needed on Microstamping
The Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE) has submitted a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder stating its position that prior to further legislation being passed, a federally funded study on firearms microstamping must be conducted.

This letter is another valuable tool for industry in the fight against firearms microstamping.

Congressional Staffers Shoot Recess Skeet

August 27, 2009 (Washington, DC) - A record number of Congressional staffers joined the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation on Wednesday for the annual August Recess Shoot at the Prince George's County Trap and Skeet Center in Glenn Dale, Maryland.

The Recess Shoot is designed to bring Congressional staff together for a fun day out of the office with hands on experience at the shooting range and to discuss issues in the U.S. Congress that impact sportsmen and the outdoor industry.

Participants ranged from beginners who had never touched a firearm to experienced shooters. The beginning shooters were introduced to the sport with one-on-one lessons in firearm safety and target shooting skills from experienced instructors, while the more experienced shooters took part in the friendly competition to determine the best shot.

Shotgun shooter takes aim"This year, we had more than 100 people participate including nearly a third that had never held a shotgun before," said CSF President Jeff Crane.
