The Beretta 92A1 9mm semi-automatic is legendary for good reason: it’s well-balanced, capable, elegant and “just right” functional. This trusted 9mm Luger is ambidextrous. The barrel is 4.9” long. The gun is 5.4” tall, 1.5” wide and 8.5” long overall. The slightly wider than normal 1.5” width is due to the ambidextrous thumb safety. Unloaded weight is 33.3 ounces, or just over two pounds.
You can get the gun with either three 10-round magazines or three 17-round mags. In either case, the magazine architecture is double-stack, and they’re corrosion resistant.
The gun is all matte black with a cut out slide and a cut back nose. Both features eschew the blocky look you’ll see on many other semi-automatics. This lithe design has function: saving weight and decreasing silhouette. It also showcases the top of the barrel.
Move to the back of the slide and your fingers will graze the gently forward angled slide serrations. They are narrow and tightly packed. And behind them is the ambidextrous thumb safety that reveals a red dot when the gun is on in “fire” mode.
An external circular loop hammer punctuates the back. Atop the slide are white 3-dot dovetailed sights. The front sight is shark finned for snag minimization. The gun has a two-slot MIL-STD-M1913 Picatinny rail giving you real estate to mount tactical accessories. Behind it is the smooth, rounded trigger guard with a rounded belly and an undercut at back. Framed within is a smooth trigger. Neither the trigger guard nor the trigger is serrated.
Note the hammer, thumb safety, magazine release, slide catch and takedown latch are all nicely serrated for tactile intuition and better traction. The beavertail is medium in length and has a gentle downward turn. The frame includes an integrated recoil buffer and a captive recoil spring assembly that’s unitized for easier maintenance and cleaning.
The gun has nicely designed grip panels. They’re not showy but quite functional, with diamond checkering for nice feel. Their fastened in place at top and bottom by simple flat-head screws and visually punctuated by a loudly and largely proclaimed Beretta triple arrow triple circle insignia. The grip frame has vertical grip serrations on both the front strap and the nicely curved back strap too.
The grip bottom showcases a lanyard loop. The magazine release is reversible. It and the flared magazine well for nearly effortless magazine swaps. It’s worth noting the gun can still fire even when there’s no magazine loaded. While some Berettas are Made in USA, the 92A1 is Made in Italy.
