The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 AR-15 type semi-automatic shows that though the world is replete with ARs, there is always room for one more that is thoughtfully designed, has creative flourishes, improved modularity, etc.
The blowback operated FX-9 comes in one color: black and one caliber: 9x19 mm. But it is available in four barrel lengths: 4”pistol, 8” pistol, 16” carbine and Canada-only 18” carbine. Hence, we’ll focus on the three American models. Overall lengths are 18.5”, 24.5” and 31.5” respectively and weights are 4.5, 5.2 and 6.1 pounds respectively.
The short lengths provided ease of operation in confined spaces such as for home defense.
FX-9 uses QPQ (quench polish quench) nitrided hardened steel components. The QPQ surfacing provides for extended wear protection and corrosion resistance. The machined aluminum receiver is Type III anodized. The barrel, bolt, ejector, last round hold open, feed ramp and extractor are all made of steel. and nitrided against wear and corrosion.
The 4? and 8? barreled pistols use the KAK Shockwave Blade polymer “fin” stabilizing brace. This component weighs only 5 ounces and has its own proprietary buffer tube. The 16? FX-9 carbine features a standard mil-spec buffer tube.
All three variants have an almost full-length Picatinny rail that runs their crest. All have an M-LOK handguard. Even the 4” barrel gun has a 3.625” rail handguard with one M-LOK slot on either side. The bottom slot is taken by a propriety detachable FX-9 angled T6 aluminum foregrip, which might be easier to envision as an ergonomic hand stop. The two longer guns have 7.5” rail and 15” rail M-LOK handguards with more slots, of course. The two shorter lengths have a faux suppressor while the longer 16” barrel has an A-3 bird cage flash suppressor.
All three have standard AR-15 components such as an AR-type rear charging handle, AR safety selector, AR pistol grip that has straight forward and rear surfaces except for two finger rests for the middle finger and pinky finger respectively.
The FX-9 Pistol is for right-handed use. FX-9s use Glock-type stick magazines and are Made in USA by Freedom Ordnance of Chandler, Indiana.
