The Yugoslav/Serbian Zastava N-PAP M70 7.62 x 39mm gas-operated semi-automatic descends from the Soviet AK-47. The AK spawned the Soviet AKM, which begat the Zastava M70. This evolved to the Zastava N-PAP M70, an export-friendly version designed to comply with American laws. The gun was made by Zastava in Yugoslavia in what is now Serbia.
The N-PAP M70 is the Gen2 version of the PAP M70. The earlier model had some jamming/feeding problems. Part of that was addressed in the N-PAP M70 using a double-stack bolt.
This gun is part of a suite that also includes the current ZPAPM70. Zastava says it has made millions and lauds the gun’s durability, which makes perfect sense. From its distant AK origins, the family was designed with utmost tough Soviet winter war conditions Soviet troops endured during World War II.
The N-PAP M70’s 16.3” long chrome-lined barrel is cold hammer forged for increased resilience. It features a 1.0 mm straight-cut receiver, 30-round curved detachable magazine and dark walnut furniture. It has adjustable front and rear iron sights. It also has a bolt hold open notch on the gun’s safety selector. Overall length is 35.0”, and the gun weighs about 7.9 pounds.
If you are hankering for a rugged piece of East Bloc nostalgia, the Zastava N-PAP M70 might be just what you are looking for.
