Compound Bow History

You might have come across older archery materials, say from around the turn of the 20th century, that might have used the term "compound bow" when they really meant "composite bow." At the time compound bows as we know them did not exist, so the term was used for composite bows, which are bows made of laminated horn, wood and sinew. Today we use "compound" to describe bows that use a levering system to bend their limbs. The compound bow was first designed in the mid 1960s by Holless Wilber Allen, an American archer.
