The Daniel Defense DD5 large caliber AR type rifle family focuses on accuracy and reliability. The nomenclature bears some further exploration. V3, V4 and V5 aren’t generational versions, but barrel lengths. V3 is the 16” barrel that comes in .308 (with a 1:11” twist). Moving up two inches to the 18” V4, we have all three chambers: .308 (1:11”), 6.5 Creedmore (1:8”), .260 REM (1:7”). And finally, V5 is the 20” 6.5 Creedmore (1:8”) and .260 REM (1:7”).

The key metrics for the 16” barrel are 8.3 pounds total weight, total length of 33 3/8" to 37". The 18” barrel is .3 pounds heavier and two inches longer at 35 3/8" to 39". The 20” barrel is 8.9 pounds and total length is 38 3/8" to 41 5/8".

The new DD5 platform rifles are black. They have ambidextrous controls such as a GRIP-N-RIP charging handle, bolt catch, magazine release, safety selector, etc. They have a gas block machined of 4140 hardened steel that’s two-position adjustable for suppressed or unsuppressed shooting.

Regardless of length or caliber, the gun uses a cold hammer forged, chrome lined barrel that’s connected to the upper receiver via a 4-Bolt Connection System for increased rigidity, accuracy and durability. Speaking of which, the bolt carrier group is DLC-coated (diamond like) for durability, lower maintenance and a reduction in felt recoil.

Both upper receiver and lower receiver are machined from 7075-T6 aerospace industry aluminum that’s Type III hard coat anodized. The lower receiver has a flared magazine well and at rear, a QD swivel mount.

Fronting the barrel is a pronged Daniel Defense Superior Suppression Device made from 17-4 PH Stainless Steel and nitride finished. It’s attached via a 5/8”×24 TPI thread.

The handguard is an M-LOK type Daniel Defense has christened the DD5 Rail 15.0 machined out of 6061-T6 aluminum that is crested by a full length accessory rail atop a bridge rib. The gun comes without any sights, but it is ready for them! The handguard artfully flares forward below the muzzle. 6062-T6 is less strong than 7075-T6, but it’s great to use in this capacity since it is easier to form into things like handguards!

Moving toward the back, six position receiver extension is also made of 7075-T6 Aluminum. Behind it is a Daniel Defense polymer spaced triangular buttstock topped with a soft touch zig zag tire tread pattern overmold and backed by a thick rubber pad.

The polymer pistol grip has a unique soft touch overmolded on the sides and back of the grip. The overmold pattern matches the one atop the buttstock harmonizing the design. The grip is nicely contoured with a deep undercut under the gently curved trigger guard that bridges the gap between the box magazine and the grip. The trigger is also by Daniel Defense.

Daniel Defense DD5 AR type rifles come with a Magpul PMAG 20 round magazine and work with all SR-25 magazines.
