The H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic chambered in big bore high-energy 45-70 Government ammo evokes old Winchesters, but it’s not an actual replica of one. In fact, it’s modeled after Frank Wesson tip-up rifles of the 1850s. The 1871 moniker in the company’s legal “H&R 1871, LLC” name is a perfect match for the Buffalo Classic’s impeccable 19th Century looks.

This Harrington & Richardson rifle’s beautiful fit and finish and craftsmanship include a great looking antique-style color case hardened receiver and a long, elegant forearm that matches the lengthy proportions of the 32” midweight barrel. Other dimensions include a 14” length of pull, 1 ¾” drop at comb, 2 5/8” drop at heel and 46” overall length. Commensurate with its length and materials, the 1871 weighs 8 pounds.

The traditional globe-style aperture Lyman target front sight is paired to a rear adjustable Williams peep sight with a long sight radius in between. The front sight is made of steel and has a dovetail pedestal. You get eight aperture inserts to use with it, giving you a tremendous latitude of ranges.

In back, the lithe looks continue with the straight stock made of resplendent American black walnut that’s given cut-checkering and a fabulous polish. The forend is checkered as well!

The steel crescent buttplate does nothing to mitigate the impressive recoil, but it looks great. Anything else would look out of place.
