The centerfire Marlin Model 336 lever-action rifle debuted in 1948. Though that’s seven decades ago, it’s only half as old as the Marlin Arms Company, founded by John M. Marlin in New Haven, Connecticut in 1870! Marlin’s top-of-the-line 336 soldiers on because people love lever-actions and they look great. The guns are also historic since it is with the 336 that Marlin combined a new circular bolt design and Micro-Groove rifling with its already innovative scope friendly flattop side ejection port receiver. Moreover, the latest 336s couple retro looks with the latest in modern manufacturing.

Model 336 lever-actions are chambered in .30-30 Win. or .35 Rem.

The 336’s Marlin Dark model is all matte black. The stealthy tactical stock isn’t polymer but hardwood with a Parkerized finish for durability. The gun has a 16.25” threaded and Micro-Groove rifled barrel (with 12 grooves!) and a big-loop lever down below. On top is an XS lever accessory rail accompanied by a ghost ring peep sight at rear and an XS Sights front post sight.

The short barrel makes it easy to handle in tight woods. The loop is paracord wrapped for gloved grip for seemingly any condition and any weather. The 336 Marlin Dark’s length-of-pull (LOP) is 13.75”. It has a 34.5” overall length and weighs 7.65 pounds.

The flagship 336C is chambered for .30-30 Win and has a 20” barrel. The metal parts are blued and joined to nice American walnut. The forend and grip both have beautifully detailed checkering with pennant surrounds. The grip also features an attractive diamond in checkered area. On top is a Wide-Scan hooded brass bead ramp front sight followed by a fully adjustable semi-buckhorn folding rear sight. Moreover, the receiver is tapped for scope mounts. LOP is 13.75” and overall length is 38.5”. Weight is 7.0 pounds.

The Model 336SS is very similar to the 336C but uses stainless-steel construction for the receiver, lever, etc. The Model 336C Scoped is simply a 336C that comes standard with a factory mounted 3-9x32mm scope. It’s also bore-sighted.

The 336C Compact is chambered for .30-30 Win and has a 16.5” barrel. The metal parts are blued and joined to nice American walnut. The forend and grip both have beautifully detailed checkering with pennant surrounds. The grip also features an attractive diamond on each side. LOP is 12. 5”, overall length is 33.25” and weight is 6.5 pounds.

The Marlin 336TDL is the “Texan Deluxe”. This 6+1 .30-30 Win has a 20” barrel and straight-grip stock. The receiver is nicely blued and gold inlaid with the Marlin rider and horse. The forend and stock are B-grade American black walnut. On top is a Semi-Buckhorn rear sight. LOP is 13.5” and overall length is 38.5”.

Other models such as the Model 336C Curly Maple, Model 336BL, Model 336 Extra Fancy and Model 336XLR vary in material, barrel length, ornamentation, etc.

336s have both a trigger block and a two-piece firing pin. Either prevents the gun from firing unless the lever is closed. There are two manual safeties that provide additional safety. These are the hammer block safety and a half cock safety.

Marlin drills and taps the receivers so they are ready for scopes. The side-ejection port is also scope friendly. Moreover, the rear sights are fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

The solid steel receiver and trigger guard are heat-treated for extra durability and ruggedness.
