The Marlin 60 14+1 capacity .22 LR rimfire rifle was developed in 1959 and put in production the following year, hence the “60” name. The direct blowback semi-automatic has a walnut-laminated stock. The barrel is 19” long, micro-grooved and given a protective precision crown. Underneath is the 14-round tubular magazine. It has a cross-bolt safety and an automatic "last shot" bolt hold-open. Overall length is 37.5”, length of pull is 13 1/4" and weight is 5.5 pounds.

The Micro-Grooving deserves a bit more exploration. Marlin introduced Micro-Groove rifling and capitalizes the individual words with pride. The 1:16” twist ratio bore has more grooves – 16 to be exact - than most other guns and thus more lands (the non-grooved portions) too. This means less bullet distortion, a tighter gas seal, improved performance and improved accuracy that results in tighter groups.

Note: until the mid-1980s, Marlin made a slightly longer 22” barrel gun that was 40.5” overall and had a 17-round tube magazine. From then, to comply with various laws, the tube magazine was reduced in length and thus didn’t reach as far as the front of the muzzle to just 14 rounds. Later the gun’s barrel was shortened to the present day’s 19” length. So now the barrel and magazine align once again!

So back to the current models… The stock has a Monte Carlo raised fixed cheek rest. The barrel, tube and other metal components are blued. Or you can get the Marlin 60SB that uses stainless steel components in lieu of the blued ones.

The Model 60SN has a black synthetic stock, swivel studs and integral checkering. There is also a Model 60SN w/ Scope model that features a 4x20mm scope. It weighs 6 pounds instead of the 5.5 pounds of all the others.

The Model 60C has a camouflaged stock and recoil pad mated to blued metal parts. The Model 60SS has stainless steel paired to a two-tone gray wood laminated stock. The effect is rather fetching!

The MODEL 60SS 150 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION has a nice commemorative medallion on the American black walnut stock.

The standard Model 60, Model 60C, Model 60SN and Model 60SN w/ Scope all have a receiver that’s grooved for mounting scopes, ramp front sight and an adjustable open rear sight. The other models also have receiver grooved for mounting scopes, but their sights are different. They have a ramp front sight with high-visibility post and cutaway Wide-Scan hood and an adjustable semi-buckhorn folding rear sight.

Marlin is based in Madison, North Carolina, but current Model 60 production is done at Marlin’s new Huntsville, Alabama location.
