Mossberg 500/590 Retrograde Series is a lineup of four 12-gauge shotguns. The standard model is the 590. It’s new for 2020. It’s a 6+1 12-gauge shotgun built around an 18.5” barrel and a 3” chamber. It’s a good looking piece of work with a heat shielded barrel, varnished walnut pump and stock, authoritative lines and a good color contrast between the aforementioned wood and the blued barrel, magazine, receiver and other key parts.

The gun has a bead sight in front. It accepts cylinder bore chokes that fit flush with the barrel. The long matte black heat shield is a nice long circular ported shroud that helps prevent self-inflicted user burns from a hot barrel.

The pump is ribbed. The pistol grip is nicely textured. The stock ends with a thick skeletonized rubber pad that nearly color matches the stock’s wood making for an attractive and functional ensemble. The 590 Retrograde’s length of pull is fixed at 13.87". Overall length is 39.5”, and the gun weighs 7.0 pounds.

The next Mossberg Retrograde model up is the 8+1 version. It is the same as already described except it uses a longer 20” barrel and, of course, a longer magazine tube that extends as far forward as the muzzle. Weight climbs a tad to 7.25 pounds, and overall length is 41”.

The 590 A1 Retrograde adds a heavy walled barrel profile. It uses a ghost ring sight and has a Parkerized barrel finish.

There’s a fourth model too. It’s the 500 Retrograde. It’s similar to the standard 590 Retrograde model except it lacks a heat shield, and it’s only a 5+1 capacity. The barrel is blued, but not matte blued. The tube is shorter, and it’s also .25 pounds lighter and thus comes in at 6.75 pounds.
