The Nighthawk Border Special M1911-type 8+1 semi-automatic pistol is an elegant high-tech assembly of high-tech components.

Let’s cover some key metrics. First, the Nighthawk Border Special has a Commander-size black nitride finished frame and comes in two calibers, 9 mm and .45 ACP. Its key dimensions are its 4.25” long match-grade barrel, 7.85” overall length, 5.4” height and 1.40” width. Empty weight is 34.1 ounces. The barrel has a crowned muzzle that is flush with the muzzle bushing and recoil spring plug.

In front is a low-profile gold bead sight that’s 1/6” tall. Its bead is solid, not plated, 14-karat gold that is not only for looks but makes daytime sight alignment easy. Meanwhile, the back is staked with a serrated back Heinie Black SlantPro. Its distinctive ski jump profile ramps down to the front, making it snag-resistant and thus optimizing it for concealed carry. The sight radius between the two dovetailed sights is 5.76”.

The slide is a gently contoured barrel vault. The gun’s beveled slide stop, contoured thumb safety and circular magazine release are all only on the left. However, the graceful beavertail grip safety is, of course, ambidextrous. Above it is a skeletonized hammer with a serrated thumb pad.

Now to the gun’s rear half. The slide rear is serrated for good grip. Below them, the high-reaching grip panels are made of exotic (and now protected) Cocobolo wood from Central America. The panels are classic M1911 double-diamond types with diamond hatching and the two large double-diamond/quasi-arrowhead screw-surrounds that point toward each other and Nighthawk medallions at center. The grip front and rear are stippled waves of metal and the mainspring housing is notched.

Unusually, the curved trigger is solid, but it’s also vertically serrated along the curve and protected by a rounded trigger guard. The firing pin is a .38 Super made of stainless steel.

The 8-round single-stack magazines are nicely designed with counting holes and polymer base pads.
