The Rock River Arms R9 Competition BT-9 9x19mm is a handsomely styled AR-15 type 9 mm semi-automatic with unique looks and feature-rich functionality. It combines all this with a portable package that’s only 6.8 pounds and 35” long.

Rock River Arms (RRA) makes many A4 style upper receivers. The R9’s is no exception and is extruded from aluminum. The upper receiver has an integrated Picatinny rail. This aligns with a short ramp that goes down as it goes forward, crests the handguard and then ramps back up to a five-slot Picatinny rail above the handguard’s forward end.

Moving to the front, the 15” long lightweight aluminum M-LOK compatible handguard has the classic raised roof octagonal profile. The handguard has M-LOK slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and a pattern of small forward tilted diagonal racetracks for the two upper corners. The two bottom corners are much the same except they have two M-LOK slots at the front. It’s a gorgeous piece of work that integrates neatly and almost seamlessly with the upper receiver. The join is visible, but barely. And it’s free-floating.

Semi-cloaked inside the handguard is the 16” long chrome moly barrel with a 1 to 10” twist. Its vanguard is RRA’s uniquely styled 9 mm Mini Brake that’s twisted on via a fine ½”x36 TPI thread. The design includes a crown that actually literally looks like a crown. And this brake uses compensator ports rather than chambers, but it has a five-hole porting pattern of a medium port circumscribed by four smaller ones. This pattern goes around the muzzle brake.

The lower receiver is also aluminum. It ends with a Glock magazine-compatible flared magwell. Just behind it is the oversized for gloved operations Winter trigger guard that frames an RRA two-stage trigger.

Below, the Hogue rubber grip has three distinct finger recesses. At the back is a six-position RRA Operator CAR Stock. It’s lightly skeletonized and has the usual squeeze latch to move the stock between positions and a rubber butt pad too.
