The Ruger Security-9 semi-automatic is an attractive and affordable lineup of striker-fired 9 mm everyday carry pistols. They include different sizes, sight combinations, grip styles and can be had in either 10+1 or 15+1 capacities.

These guns have been nicely designed, avoiding snags and with a harmony of lines that is neither too many nor too few. The slide has a flat top, beveled sides, beveled front and a rounded back. Rounded corners and soft edges abound. The muzzle is flush with the muzzle bushing. Except in a couple of places such as the familiar Ruger upside down Y pattern grip panels, all the lines seem functional. And even there, the styling has a function: brand identity!

The Ruger Security-9 has a black oxide finished steel alloy slide and a fiberglass reinforced nylon polymer frame. Inside is a lightweight aluminum chassis with full-length guide rails. The slide has both front and rear forward facing diagonal serrations. A nice touch is that the serrations are bent forward half way to the top. The rearmost front serration aligns neatly with corresponding line where the frame expands just behind the three-slot Picatinny accessory rail under the recoil spring housing.

The Compact version’s alloy steel blued barrel is 3.42” long. This brings overall length to 6.52”. The slide width is 1.02”, height is 4.35, and weight is 21.9 ounces.

In contrast, the Standard version is bigger in every way except width, which is the same. Other dimensions are the 4” barrel, overall length of 7.24”, height of 5”, and still fairly light 24.3 ounce weight. It also has a four-slot Picatinny rail in lieu of the Compact’s three-slots.

In standard configuration, Ruger Security-9 guns are black and come with low profile dovetail sights. The front sight is fixed while the rear sight is drift adjustable. Their architecture is familiar, but they differ in detail from many superficially similar sights. The front white dot sight sits on a wide base versus the normal narrow base. The rear sight eschews the usual two white dot format for a white “U” shape and is adjustable for drift/windage.

Controls are non-ambidextrous and located on the left. However, they are nicely designed. They are small and flat for snag-reduction, but are still have nice tactile feel and optimal placement. The grips are nicely textured. The high-grip typical of striker-fired pistols makes the gun feel just right when fired, channeling reverse thrust into the operator’s hand.

These Rugers have a safety trigger with Ruger’s Secure Action system that delivers a crisp feel, a thumb safety and a hammer catch helps prevent the hammer from firing the gun unless the trigger is pulled. Let’s cover the specific Security-9 models and their differences:

First, the Compact 10+1, Standard 10+1 and Standard 15+1. Each comes with two double-stack alloy steel magazines.

The next two models are the same but with Hogue Grip Sleeves that wrap around the grip and beavertail bottom, adding finger grooves and improving comfort and control.

The next step up are the two Viridian E-Series Red Laser models in Compact 10+1 and Standard 15+1 formats. They have the lasers but lack the Hogue Grip Sleeves.

Last of the most common models are the Pro series Compact Pro 10+1 and the larger Pro 15+1. They are the same as the standard models, albeit with high-visibility steel white dot tritium sights. They also have three magazines instead of just two.

There are additional models offering a variety of catchy colors. All come with the previously mentioned low profile sights.

Perhaps the most interesting is the Dark Earth Cerakoted 15+1 in the compact frame! It’s worth noting that the magazine juts out the grip though it has a nice compact adaptor magazine extension that looks like the pistol grip. It looks nice, and it’s very practical. However, the real dimensional benefit is in overall length, and not so much in height.

Other choices include a pair of 10+1 Turquoise frame compact guns. One model has a black slide while the other has a silver Cerakoted slide. Another black 10+1 is a limited edition Navy Seal Foundation model that’s different from the others because it features a tan trident along the top of the slide and some additional Navy Seal Foundation markings.

The standard size 15+1 guns optional finishes include black (with a Savage Silver slide), Cobalt Kinetic (with a Savage Silver slide), Coyote Brown, Dark Earth, Jungle Green and Turquoise (with a black slide).

Ruger Security-9 semi-automatics are made at Ruger’s Prescott, Arizona facility. Thus they are Made in USA.
