The centerfire Savage 110 rifle series frequently picks up mentions as the best budget single bolt-action rifle. Its roots go back to 1958 when it was designed and first produced by Nicholas L. Brewer and patented in 1963. Since that same year, it has been in continuous production by Savage at its Westfield, Massachusetts factory, making it the longest running continuously produced single bolt rifle in the USA.

The current Savage 110 rifle series has an astonishing 30 variants. Each of those in turn has subvariants. For instance, the Savage 110 Tactical has five combinations of 20” and 24” 5R barrel lengths and a four calibers, including the 10 round magazine 20” barrel 308 Win and the 5 round 308 Win Mag, 10 round 6.5 Creedmore and 8 round 6.5 PRC, all with 24” barrels. The 110 APEX Hunter XP has 20 subvariants. Other Savage 110s also have a wide array of choices.

In spite of its rich heritage, the rifle law enforcement stock design keeps it looking modern. Most Savage 110s have polymer stocks that reduces weight a tad compared to older wooden models or even the Savage 110 Classic wood stock variant.

The wood stock 110 Classic features Savage’s adjustable AccuTrigger. This trigger prevents the rifle from discharging when jarred or dropped. Most, if not all, other Savage 110 models not only have AccuTrigger but also include AccuStock, and AccuFit components.

The AccuStock holds the barrel in place in the stock. The AccuStock steel chassis sits in the polymer stock. As expected, it has two bolt threads, but serendipitously, it has two long rails extending forward, which then secures the action in three dimensions. Something like this is normally not found in this price range.

The AccuFit system provides the butt stock with an adjustable comb and adjustable length of pull. It comes with four spacers. Just remove two screws and put in the spacing you want. It also has five different combs for a variety of comb heights for different cheek to stock contact for optimal eye alignment.

The 110’s safety has three positions: full safe, mid safe and safety off. Full safe prevents all operations. Mid safe keeps the trigger locked while permitting bolt movement. And safety off means the gun is ready to fire. A clever design feature is that moving the safety to the safety off position exposes a red dot. There is also a cocked/uncocked indicator at the back of the bolt.

Speaking of the bolt, the Savage 110’s bolt grip is oversized in length and diameter, making it easy to grip with gloves.

Most of the Savage 110 rifles have two swivel stud screw mounts. But several, such as the Savage 110 Tactical, have three. One is toward the front of the stock where one would expect it. The next one is further toward the center, but before the magazine dock and the trigger. The third is in the butt stock. Having three points means one can simultaneously attach both a sling and a pod. Several models such as the Savage 110 Tactical feature a threaded muzzle for suppressors.

While the Savage 110 is an accurate, quality, comfortable to shoot rifle, it is both heavier and has more play in components than higher end models. For instance, the action wiggles more as it is pulled straight back. Working the butt spacers might take a little more work than in higher end models. But at this price range, these are minor quibbles.

In sum, the centerfire Savage 110 rifle is an excellent budget single bolt-action rifle.
