The Smith & Wesson M&P9 SHIELD is a micro-compact striker-fired semi-automatic chambered in 9mm Luger (7+1, 8+1 capacity) and 40 S&W (6+1, 7+1 capacity). This stainless-steel slide and barrel coupled to a polymer frame pistol has a wonderful all matte black finish, excellent ergonomics and more.

The M&P9 SHIELD has a short high-up beavertail. The raised gripping point places the bore axis closer to the user’s hand increasing control and comfort. The result is measurably less muzzle flip and faster follow-on shots.

Both slide and barrel are made of stainless steel. The slide gets S&W’s own corrosion resistant Armornite nitride finish that combats wear and enhances durability. The slide’s half-dozen vertical ocean wave rear serrations are deeply chiseled for optimal grip.

Atop the slide is a steel white dot front sight and in back a steel twin white dot sight. Both dovetail join the slide, and the rear sight is windage adjustable.

There are several different M&P Shield configurations/options. As already noted, you can get it chambered in 9mm Luger (7+1, 8+1 capacity) or 40 S&W (6+1, 7+1 capacity). The differing capacities per caliber is because each comes with a flush-mount magazine (the lower capacity one) and a slightly extended magazine.

The 40 S&W has a white dot but no thumb safety SKU that tips the scales at 17.6 ounces empty. It has a 3.1” barrel and length is 6.1”. The same but with a thumb safety weighs 20.6 ounces. Step up to the fiber optic sight model for a HI VIZ green front fiber optic, HI VIZ red fiber optics in back instead of the white dot sights. You get a magazine safety and a loaded chamber indicator too! This one weighs 20.2 ounces and is .95” wide and 4.6” tall.

The 9mm Luger variants are similar. The no thumb safety white dot version weighs 19.0 ounces, has a 3.1” barrel and is 6.1” long overall. Add the thumb safety and weigh nudges up to 20.8 ounces. The fiber optic model has a HI VIZ green front fiber optic, HI VIZ red rear fiber optics and the aforementioned loaded chamber indicator. This SKU also has a magazine safety.

The 9mm Luger barrel is 4.25” long and has a 1 to 10” twist. Overall length is 7.4” and weight is 24.7 ounces. There is also a 5” barrel with an 8.3” overall length and gently increased 26.9-ounce weight that also adds a thumb safety in back.
