LSB#: 180310TA08

Make: Made by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium for Browning

Model: Browning Auto Rifle Grade 1

Serial Number: 9326

Year of Manufacture: 1960 – Proof House (Production of the .22 Short rifles began in 1956 with a 19” barrel, but it wasn’t until 1958 that 22” barrels were used.”

Caliber: .22 Short

Action Type: This is a semi-automatic rifle with a tubular magazine in the butt. It is a takedown model with a removable barrel.

Markings: The upper surface of the groove at the front of the forend is marked “H”. The bottom of the well just behind it is marked “K” and there is a “3” stamped just in front of the forend screw hole. The top of the barrel is marked “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY ST. LOUIS Mo. & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE IN BELGIUM”. The left side of the barrel is marked “22 Shot SMOKELESS” and near the receiver with a “* / A” inspection mark, “.22C”. a “Lion / P.V” proof, a crowned “R” rifled barrel proof and a crowned “E / LG / *” proof. The right side of the barrel is marked “BROWNING’S PATENT”. The underside of the breechblock is marked with a “Lion / PV” proof, a “* / Y” inspection mark (Leon Chesnoy 1959-68) and a Peron. There is also a Peron at the top rear of the receiver. The front face of the trigger guard is marked with a script “R”. The round plate that secures the magazine rod is marked “A 9 / 326” (Prior to 1961, “A” was the code for .22 Short). The sides of the receiver and the trigger guard are scroll engraved.

Barrel Length: 22”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass bead dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a “U” notched elevator sight that uses a thumbwheel on the right side of the sight to adjust the elevation. The right side of the thumbwheel is marked “1 2 3 4”. The top of the receiver is grooved for scope mounts.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a lacquered finish. The stock has a pistol grip and a flat serrated blued steel buttplate with a hole in the center for access to the magazine rod. There is also a groove in the right side of the buttstock for loading shells into the magazine without completely withdrawing the magazine tube. The forend tapers at the rear to match the outline of the receiver. There are several light handling marks scattered over the stocks. There is also a sharp ding in the belly near the toe and a few tiny dings in the sides of the forend. The checkering shows light wear and is without mars. The LOP measures 13 7/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate, which shows very light wear at the edges of the heel and toe. The buttplate is in about Excellent condition. The stocks rate in about Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: The rifle has a blued finish with scroll engraving in the center of the receiver’s sides and border engraving around their edges.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. There are a few light handling marks in the barrel with a tiny ding in the top right shoulder of the barrel and another in the underside of the barrel. The trigger guard shows surface loss with a plum colored patina forming. There are a few tiny marks in the receiver. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. It has a cross-bolt safety at the front of the trigger guard. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: Browning first started making this rifle in 1914 as a top loader and changed it to a butt-fed tubular magazine in 1955. FN manufactured the rifle through 1974, after which it was made by Miroku of Japan. The earlier rifles were made in three grades, with Miroku adding two more. This is a Grade 1 rifle made by FN in 1960 and chambered in .22 Short. It has a 22” barrel, blue finish, and scroll engraving on the receiver and trigger guard. This rifle is rare for two reasons: there were far fewer rifles made in .22 Short vs. those made in .22 L.R., and this rifle also has the rare “Thumbwheel” rear sight. Both the caliber and the rear sight add hefty premiums over the price of a standard rifle. This rifle is in about Excellent condition with a bright bore and sharp rifling. This vintage rifle could be used on for hunting small game and informal target practice, but with its very nice condition, thumbwheel rear sight and .22 Short chambering, this early FN model is going to gather a lot of interest from the Browning collectors, who should bid it up well past what the shooters are going to be willing to pay.

CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R eligible rifle can be transferred in California.
