Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ NO RESERVE PENNY AUCTION! Civil War M1859 Sharps New Model Percussion Cavalry Carbine, .52 Cal, mfg. ca. 1862. This is a good Civil War issue Sharps carbine that needs a little work but really has tons of potential. The metal has an untouched mottled plum/gray patina throughout. Likewise the buttstock has a wonderfully untouched dark patina showing honest wear and use with a soldier's initials period carved into the left side. There is some minor edge loss behind the lock with a secure 2" check behind the upper tang on the left side of the comb and a tightly re-glued 2" chip where the upper tang meets the frame on the left side. The forearm is a vintage replacement which I think could be easily aged to better match if desired. There is a 3" crack underneath ahead of the lever and the barrel band spring is missing. The barrel band is an old cast reproduction. The buttplate is inletted for a patchbox however the gun was never fitted with one. This was right about at the transitional point where features from the upcoming 1863 Model were beginning to appear on 1859 Model guns. Original post front sight and flip-up ladder rear sight. The front sight blade has worn nearly flat with the base. Clear serial number (61044), patent dates, and mostly legible "NEW MODEL 1859" barrel marking and Hartford address. Original buttplate, hammer, trigger, Lawrence priming system, and saddle ring & bar. The lever pin has been modified or possibly a replacement however all other screws appear original. The hammer pulls back with a strong mainspring however will not hold half or full cock. A portion of the hammer screw head has broken away. The nipple is missing and the threads appear to be at least somewhat damaged. The lever & breechblock open and close securely. The bore shows strong and sharp rifling front to back with moderate blackpowder frosting scattered throughout. A great representation of an authentic Civil War Sharps that just needs a little help!
