In a 1974 last-ditch effort to save the SPIW (Special Purpose Individual Weapon), the Army had AAI (Aircraft Armament Industries) modify their XM70 rifle to fire piston primed 5.56x52mm rounds loaded with 4.32mm bullets in a clear plastic sabot. Having a somewhat shorter case than their 56mm XM645 flechette loaded predecessor (shown for comparison), the rounds have IVI 69 headstamps. This SBR (Serial Bullet Rifle, i.e., 3 shots fired one after the other with one pull of the trigger) round is discussed at the very end of the SPIW book by Stevens & Ezell, but apparently they had none to photograph. The cartridge came to me from a former Army ballistics lab employee who was involved with the project. A rare one to fill out your SPIW collection. Thanks for looking, and please email us with any questions PRIOR to bidding. Winning bidder pays $15 shipping (UPS ground). Post Office money order assures quick shipping; other checks are accepted, but must clear. For complete information on the enjoyment of cartridge collecting, visit www.cartridgecollectors.org
