Antique Starr Civil War Breech Loading Percussion Carbine. This is an outstanding example of one of approximately 20,600 percussion carbines produced by Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York circa 1862 to 1865. A very important gun for a Civil War Arms Collection.

This carbine is a 54 caliber percussion, single shot with a falling block breech mechanism, that allowed the trooper to load a linen cased cartridge into the barrel breech chamber. It has a low Serial #14941, appearing on right side of the lever breech block, which indicates manufacture in mid-1864.

The Starr Carbine was issued primarily to Federal Cavalry Troops in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and New York. This veteran of the war is mechanically perfect, all parts original and complete. Actions are crisp, smooth, and tight. It has a fixed front and leaf rear sights,

The lock is marked "STARR ARMS CO. / YONKERS, N.Y." and the upper tang is marked "STARRS PATENT / SEPT. 14TH 1858" directly behind the hammer. The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight is marked "STARR ARMS CO YONKERS N.Y.”. Inspector’s initials “H.G.S.” on left rear side of the barrel. Cartouche left side stock near ring. The barrel band is marked with sub-inspector’s "U" and the butt plate has an "S" on the tang.

The round barrel Is 21-inches long; and the bore has good lands and grooves, it needs cleaning. The surface metal is in terrific condition and is smooth and clean, without any rust or pitting. The butt plate and single barrel band are nice mellow brass; a staple mounted saddle ring is present. Mechanically perfect, all parts original and complete.

The walnut stock has some dents in the forearm and a few small minor dings in the stock. There is a small hairline crack on the right rear top of fore-stock. Wood to metal fit is very good. There is a boxed cartouche on the stock left side behind receiver.

A very popular carbine issued to the United States Cavalry; and the Starr Carbine rated high In government tests. It is mechanically perfect, all parts are original, and the metal is excellent plus.
