This original French Raphael Revolver is in nearly overall excellent condition. It is still fully functional and the distinctive loading gate and rotating back plate all function exactly as they should. A very important gun for a Civil War Arms Collection.

The revolver has a solid open top frame design, dovetailed front blade sight and a dovetailed notch rear sight. It is double action, 6-shot, 11 mm caliber with a 6” barrel. The bore rifling is very crisp and needs only to be cleaned. The two piece walnut grips are fine with some minor dents and dings. The serial number #1613 is on the left side of the frame. The action is smooth and tight.

There is a lightly etched number on the frame below the cylinder. This gun may have been in a museum as collectors don’t usually mark in this manner. There are no maker's name or other markings present. These unusual centerfire revolvers are presumed to have been manufactured in France.

Raphael revolvers are famous for very precise machining of their complex mechanism. And they fired a self-contained metallic cartridge, instead of a typical cap & ball revolver.

This revolver has a distinctive 2 part cylinder with the loading gate on the upper right side. The cylinder and breech plate rotate at the same time when the hammer is cocked, however, the cylinder can also be rotated separate from the breech plate when the loading gate is open for loading and unloading.

The gun has the original combination lanyard ring and ejector rod, which screws into the butt for storage. The ring rotates freely as a lanyard ring, but with a quarter turn; the ring locks into place and allows you to remove the ejector rod.

Raphael revolvers had been privately purchased by officers of both sides during the Civil War.

Overall this is an extremely fine example that is in excellent condition and one of the rarest of Civil War revolvers. Even many of the most advanced collections of Civil War handguns are unlikely to have a Raphael in it.

This is a stunning example that should be the centerpiece of a fine Civil War handgun display.
