Power & Precision with 338 Lapua Rifles

Though it debuted in the late 1980s, the 338 Lapua magnum cartridge has only recently become more popular on civilian and military markets, earning a “cartridge of interest" standing with the National Defense Industrial Association and in 2008 becoming a replacement candidate for US military rifles. Originally meant to fill the gap between the 7.62x51mm NATO round and the .50 BMG cartridge, the 338 Lapua was designed as a military and sniper rifle round that could pierce up to 5 layers of better-than-average body armor from long distances.

The 338 Lapua was first envisioned by US-based RAI (Research Armament Industries), but after hitting some roadblocks such as flimsy case sidewalls, the effort was taken up by a combination of British rifle manufacturer Accuracy International, Finnish rifle manufacturer SAKO and Finnish ammunition manufacturer Lapua (now a part of the Nordic Ammunition Group). Together these industry experts strengthened and perfected the cartridge casing, making it highly pressure resistant.

Today 338 Lapua rifles are used around the world, particularly by military snipers who appreciate the relative lack of barrel wear that the 338 Lapua cartridge provides. Additionally 338 rifles have become a popular big game weapon with the advent of a few high quality, semi-custom bolt actions that can be used with other rifle components and high grade optics to create custom sport and target rifles capable of making long distance shots.
