What is a Combination Gun?
A combination gun has two or more barrels of different calibers, at least one rifle, and one shotgun. The most common is a break-action over/under configuration where one barrel is on top of the other. There are also drilling rifles that combine three barrels, usually two shotgun barrels side-by-side and a rifle barrel underneath. A much rarer combo is the vierling, which has four barrels.
What is a Combination Gun Good For?
Hunters often find themselves after more than one kind of quarry in places where seasons overlap. This is where a combination gun is ideal. For example, a .22LR/20ga combo is great for small game and upland bird hunting. The shotgun barrel offers a quick shot at flushing birds, and the rifle provides longer shots at rabbits and squirrels.
The same concept applies to larger-caliber combination guns. For a deer hunter, something like a .223 Rem. rifle barrel over a 12-gauge shotgun barrel would be very handy in the woods if they happened across forest grouse.
This is exactly why several survival rifles are combos. The M6 was a .22 Hornet/.410 bore combo gun that was once issued to U.S. airmen in case they needed a gun to forage for food in the event of a downed aircraft.
