History of the .44 Magnum Revolver

Originally designed for revolvers and later adapted for carbines and rifles, the .44 Magnum is a large-bored cartridge resulting from years of tuned hand-loading of the .44 Special. It was developed by 20th century writer and outdoorsman, Elmer Keith, to be a lengthened .44 Special loaded to higher pressures for a greater velocity. Keith approached manufacturers Smith & Wesson and Remington to produce the ammunition on a commercial level, and in 1955, Smith & Wesson produced the Model 29 .44 Magnum revolver. Soon after, in 1956, Ruger began producing the single-action Ruger Blackhawk .44 Magnum Revolver. In 2006, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the .44 Magnum, Ruger introduced a special 50th anniversary Blackhawk .44 Magnum revolver in the "Flattop" style. While popular with shooters since its introduction, the .44 Magnum revolver gained widespread popularity in 1971 when it was used in Clint Eastwood's feature film, "Dirty Harry." In the movie, Eastwood describes the Smith & Wesson M29 .44 Magnum revolver as the "most powerful handgun in the world."
