Know Your Ammo: 6.8 SPC Ammo

The 6.8 mm Special Purpose Cartridge was developed by Remington and the United States Special Operations Command in 2002. The hope was to extend lethality while maintaining magazine capacity and recoil characteristics in M16 rifles when compared to the 5.56x45mm NATO. The cartridge was meant to offer middle ground between the 5.56 and the 7.62x51mm.

The cartridge's design was based on the .30 Remington and altered to fit magazines of the M16 that were already in use by the U.S. Armed Forces. The 6.8 caliber was decided on as a compromise between the accuracy and penetration ability of the 6.5 mm and the terminal performance of the 7 mm.

By 2004, the U.S. military regularly used 6.8 SPC ammo for special operations. Widespread military adoption never caught on, however. Remington offers a commercially available version of the 6.8 SPC ammo.
