7mm mag basics
The 7mm Remington Magnum was released with the Remington Model 700 bolt action rifle in 1962. Based on the then-popular .264 Winchester Magnum, the 7mm Mag's design offered improved cartridge extraction, causing it to usurp the .264 Winchester Magnum's place on the market. Its belted design allowed for more reliable extraction and less chance for catastrophic failure when fired. This is especially desirable when hunting dangerous game that may necessitate a quick follow-up shot.
The 7mm mag is popular for use on the plains of the United States and Africa, where extra range is often required to hunt. The ammo is especially effective and versatile against medium game. There are some detractors to the cartridges belt, mostly hand loaders, but the belt does help thicken the primer pocket area to maximize case life. The Secret Service also uses the cartridges in urban areas for counter-sniper operations.
7mm specs
The 7mm mag's parent case was the .375 H&H Magnum. The case accounts for 2.5 inches of the cartridges 3.29 –inch length. The rifling twist ratios come in between 1:9 and 1:10. The primer is the large rifle magnum variety. The bullet diameter is .284 inches (7.2 mm). The diameter is .512 inches at the base and extends to .532 inches at the rim. 7mm mag ammo comes in a variety of weights that fire at velocities between 2,860 and 3,500 to feet per second. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute set the maximum pressure at 61,000 Psi or 52,000 CUP.
