The American Tactical (ATI) Cavalry 12-gauge, 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410 gauge over/under shotguns pay homage to the US Army’s 19th Century Cavalry and Remingtons and Winchesters from the Wild West.
Don’t let the fabulous retro-style steel and walnut fool you: they are fully modern and Made in Turkey. Construction includes lightweight aviation-industry quality 7075 aluminum designed for high-tensile strength and structural integrity. (In fact, this aluminum was invented in Japan and did things like permit the Mitsubishi Zero’s combination of maneuverability and extraordinary range). The result is strength in a package that weighs just 6 pounds.
The barrel is 4140 chrome moly steel punctuated by a brass bead front sight. The gun comes standard with five choke tubes that use Beretta Benelli Mobil Choke System threads.
If these guns were unadorned, they’d still be splendid. The rich oil-finished Turkish walnut and lustrous metal guarantees that. But several go further with beautiful laser-engraved scrollwork that affordably replicates the expensive hand-engraving process that was once the exclusive domain of very expensive guns. These guns also have grip-friendly checkering both on the forend and pistol grip.
The 12-, 20- and .410-gauge guns have 3” chambers while the 28-gauge has a 2 3/4” chamber. The lineup features a 14.23” length of pull. Drop at comb is 1.45” while drop at heel is 2.20”. There are various options for 26”, 28” and other barrel lengths.
You can also get these guns with either extractors or ejectors. With extractors, spent casings stay in the gun but are in easy reach. With ejectors, the casings fling free. This might be more convenient unless they hit you when they come out and/or if you don’t want to have to look for them. So, each has its benefits. Also the Cavalry’s standard single-selective triggers let you determine which barrel fires first.
