The American Tactical Imports (ATI) GSG STG-44 is a 25+1 .22 LR HV replica of the World War II-era STG-44 assault rifle, albeit one that is semi-automatic only. GSG stands for German Sports Guns, which is the gun’s manufacturer, and German Sports Guns is actually based in Germany. STG is short for Sturmgewehr (literally “storm rifle” or “assault rifle”), and the “44” honors the original’s model 1944-year name.

Before the Germans finalized the STG-44 designation, it had been called MP 43 and MP 44 (as in Machine Pistol 1943 and Machine Pistol 1944). These are very similar to the STG-44.

The STG-44 was designed to famed designer Hugo Schmeisser. This matte black metal bodied wood stock gun is the world’s original assault rifle and the progenitor of all that have followed. STG-44 was utilized during World War II late and last stages and saw extensive service fighting in rubble-cluttered streets, buildings and elsewhere.

The gun is 2.2” wide across at the cocking lever. Height is 8.7”. Overall length is 37.3”. The system’s heart is its 16.3” barrel. Inside, it’s rifled for 15.9” of that length, and you’ve got 6 grooves. The standard model comes with a 25-round magazine, but there are also 10-round versions available. The original guns had 25-round magazines too. That under 30 number was to decrease the odds of jamming.

It’s fairly easy to maintain. It breaks down into six major sections. For instance, the buttstock is secured by a simple stock bolt.

It has an elevated hooded front blade sight while the rear sight is atop the receiver. Both are iron sights, and the sight radius is 17.1”. The square notch rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. The gun weighs 9.1 pounds empty (without the magazine). Add the 25-round mag and weight increases by .6 pounds. Speaking of weights, trigger pull is under 6.6 pounds.

The gun’s ergonomics are good! It has a textured grip, an easily actuated paddle safety lever. The magazine release is just above the magazine. And there is a loaded chamber indicator. The GSG STG-44 is made by German Sports Guns GmbH in Ense-Hoingen, Germany while service and distribution are by American Tactical Imports, Inc.
