You might hear the word “Wow!” in your head the first time you lay eyes on the Rock Island Armory (RIA Imports) VR80 5+1 capacity 12-gauge gas operated semi-auto shotgun. The New for 2019 all matte black anodized VR80 is a shotgun with AR looks and AR modularity. It stands out thanks to a spiral fluted barrel shroud that twists along the exterior.

The fluted shroud’s grooves provide more surface area helping dissipate heat faster than a comparable non-fluted shroud. Fluting also lightens the gun a bit while maintaining structural integrity.

Cloaked inside the shroud and handguard is a 20” length barrel. It ends in a 3” chamber that handles 2 3/4" and 3” shells. The gun’s overall length is 40”, and weight is 8.27 pounds. The gun comes standard with three Mobil Thread choke tubes: IC, Full and Mod.

The gun’s forend, upper receiver and lower receiver are all hewn from 7075-T6 aluminum. A long Picatinny rail crests the receiver. A pair of black flip up sights top it in front and back. The rear sight is adjustable.

The forend has a triangular lattice skeleton slotted along the sides for accessories. It also comes with Picatinny rail sections that attaches to those slots. So, you should be able to attach what you want where you want.

Moving down, the trigger guard has a slight downward bulge optimized for gloved fingers. Behind that, the reversible charging handle and manual safety works with both right-handed and left-handed users. The radially ported side charging bolts are splendid pieces of art!

The BufferTHS Buttstock is stabilized by a skeletonized diagonal brace that connects back to the bottom of the pistol grip. This diagonal brace to pistol grip forms an upside-down thumbhole triangle that lends futuristic looks to practical rigidity. The buttstock is semi-fluted to pare weight, and in back is an anti-slip grooved thick black buttpad.

VR80 guns come with a pair of 5-round magazines, but you can also use aftermarket 9-round and 19-round magazines that are compatible across the range of VR series shotguns.
