The Barrett Firearms Model 99 .50 cal BMG or .416 Barrett single-shot bolt action is impressive. It integrates a 29” or 32” fluted match grade barrel, 3-port high-efficiency muzzle break, folding bipod and more into an extraordinarily stable 27 MOA platform. This long-range precision shooting rifle eschews orthodoxy for rigid linearity, pure diagonals and block shapes that might make you wonder for a nanosecond if it’s really a gun. But of course, it is.

Barrett terms the one-piece extruded upper receiver as simply the “receiver” and the lower part the “trigger housing assembly.” You can get this gun in either all matte black or matte black with the receiver and stock in FDE. The Model 99 gets a Mil-Spec hardcoat anodized base and covering that a Cerakote finish.

The BMG variants include .416 Barrett with a 32” heavy barrel or .50 cal BMG with either a 29” or 32” barrel. Whether in 29” or 32”, these are very long barrels. Think of it this way: the .50 cal 29” is 58 calibers long and the .50 cal 32” is 64 calibers long!

Let’s continue with the .50 cal 29” BMG. The barrel has a 1:15” twist ratio. On top is an endlessly long 13.75” accessory rail. The bolt has a simple, sparse design with fifteen buttress-threaded (dragon-teeth) lugs arrayed in three columns to echo the classic 3-lug breech. This provides superbly tight lockup. The bolt handle is conical and without any serrations.

It’s a single-shot gun, so there’s no magazine but rounds feed easily into the gun. Below you have a match quality trigger. There’s an A2-style pistol grip with diamond checkering on both flanks. The rear handgrip is nicely padded with a comfortable contour, and you can also have a quick detach monopod at its bottom for additional stability. Both legs are long straight beams with a two rows of large circular lightening ports on each.

Back on the receiver sits a simple two-position safety (safe and fire). Quick release assembly pins make assembly and disassembly rather easy. And in the event, there are very few parts! This stunner’s overall length is 47” and weight is 23 pounds!

The .416 Barrett with a 32” heavy barrel and .50 cal BMG with a 32” barrel are both 50” overall and weigh 25 pounds apiece. The .416 has a 1:12” twist instead of the .50 cal’s 1:15” twist.
