The Barrett REC7 DI 5.56x45 NATO direct impingement AR-15 type lineup includes a carbine, pistol and DMR (designed marksman rifle). All three semi-automatics are quite similar to Barrett’s own REC7 gas-piston operated series. That this group uses weight-saving and less expensive direct impingement is the biggest difference, but there are other minor differences as well. Let’s start by describing the carbine and then the other two.

The REC7 DI carbine wraps around a 16” stainless steel barrel grooved at a 1:7” twist ratio. Overall length is 17.3” longer than the barrel and thus 33.3”. It weighs 6.2 pounds and comes standard with a 30-round magazine. The direct impingement shaves a pound off the 7.2 pounds of the gas-piston counterpart.

The REC7 DI pistol has a shorter 10.25” barrel, 26.3” overall length, and 1:7” twist ratio. However, thanks to things like a shorter handguard, smaller 20-round magazine and simpler Magpul stock, it weighs just 6.1 pounds.

Finally, the DMR has a longer 18” barrel. It’s match-grade, made of stainless-steel, and accurate enough for a sub-MOA rating. Total length is predictably 35.3”, but it has a 1:7.7” twist ratio. Weight is 7.9 pounds, and it features a 20-round waffle-pattern magazine.

In all cases, the barrel is fronted by a high-quality Barrett 3-prong flash hider or muzzle break. Barrett uses 7075-T6 aluminum for the upper and lower receiver. The receiver parts get a thick Type 3 Class 2 anodized hardcoat that’s further finished in Cerakote in either black, Tungsten Grey or Flat Dark Earth (FDE). Additionally, the upper receiver architecture includes M4 feed ramps for increased feed reliability.

The shared feature set is impressive. For instance, the Barrett gas block is patented, chrome-lined for durability and black nitride coated for cooler operations. The action has an integrated strike face. The anti-tilt bolt carrier is hewn from solid block of 8620 steel and has a wear resistant and ultra-durable TB-41 DLC coating. DLC stands for diamond-like carbon. Nearby you get an ambidextrous 7075-aluminum and MILSPEC anodized Radian Raptor charging handle with vertical grip serrations. And it’s Made in USA.

The free-float handguard has a full-length MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail and M-LOK slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The handguard has lightening ports on all four diagonal surfaces. The gun comes with Magpul Pro backup flip up iron sights. They are spring loaded and easily knob adjustable for windage (rear sight) and elevation (front sight).

The Carbine and Pistol versions get an ALG Defense QMS Trigger. QMS stands for Quality Mil-Spec. This smooth trigger has 8620 aluminum alloy and high carbon steel parts and about 6.5 pounds of pull pressure. The DMR gets an adjustable Trigger Tech Adaptable trigger you can set for 2.5 to 5.0 pounds pull pressure. The trigger guard is slightly oversized to use with gloves. Behind it is a black Magpul MOE textured pistol grip.

All three models get different stocks. The Carbine gets the Magpul MOE SL, the pistol has the Gear Head Works Tailhook MOD 1 – Black pistol brace and the DMR features the Magpul MOE SL-S.

The Carbine’s MOE SL Stock name is short for Magpul Original Equipment Mil-Spec Model Slim Line. It works with AR15/M4 carbines that use Mil-Spec receiver extension tubes. This all-black stock is Made in USA. It is ambidextrous, featuring an angled rubber buttpad, dual-side anti-snag release flap latches and a rolled toe. It weighs 9.6 ounces and has a 3.3” length of pull adjustment. This translates to a full extension length of pull of about 14.1” and 10.8” minimum.

The Gear Head Works Tailhook MOD 1 – Black pistol brace is ultra-compact and clamps to buffer tubes. It’s made of billet aluminum, weighs 4.5 ounces, features durable hardcoat anodizing and is Made in USA.

The Magpul MOE SL-S has a pair of storage tubes with a storage area that’s nicely sealed with high visibility red O-rings and waterproof to 10 meters (33’). You can use them to store CR123A lithium batteries or AA batteries. There is one on each side of the stock permitting both visual and weight balance.
