The Bearman Industries CL22 is a 2-round .22 LR Derringer built around 2.4” over / under barrels. This was formerly the Cobra CL22LSP, CL22LBP, CL22LSR, etc. Bearman bought Cobra after it went out of business. Both companies were/are in Salt Lake City, which facilitated matters.

So back to the CL22. It’s a cheap, minimalist, 2-shot gun noted for its very heavy hammer pull and heavy trigger pull. This single-action only design has an alloy frame that you can get in a variety of finish and grip combinations. These include a satin finish that’s paired with pearl grips, satin with rosewood grips and black with pearl grips, chrome with pearl grips, etc. All look great.

No matter which you get, the Derringer has fixed sights atop a rib that features lightening cuts. These add visual interest and a touch of panache to an otherwise classic design. Speaking of which, the style is a mass of curves. The grip frame is a comma shape. The hammer is one too. Even the trigger guard is a stylized curve.

The CL22 series is designed to be simple to operate, inexpensive and easy to conceal for self-defense. It has fewer than 35 parts!

Lloading is easy. Pivot the right-side thumb lever, and the gun up upside down since the hinge point is at the tang. That’s it. Then you’re ready to go!

Derringers have their origins in guns by Henry Deringer. Note the spelling with one “r”. When John Wilkes Booth infamously assassinated Abraham Lincoln with one, journalists misspelled the gun’s name with the double-R. That’s the “Derringer” name that has stuck ever since.
