The Black Rain Ordnance AR-15 Rifle – Cold War Grey Battleworn Slim and Black Rain Ordnance AR-15 Rifle – Cold War Grey Battleworn Fat are high-end 5.56 NATO AR-type direct impingement semi-automatic rifles built around a 16” barrel, 12” handguards and MFT Minimalist Stocks. Overall length is 32.5” for both. In fact, their only point of differentiation is the handguard, and thus they also differ a tad in weight, both of which we’ll get to in a moment.

The Cold War Grey Battleworn distressed color scheme covers the handguard and the upper and lower receivers. Of course, that’s the point, and it looks great. For these guns, Black Rain uses a tough forged 7075 T6 Aluminum Upper Receiver mated to a FALLOUT15 billet 7075 T6 Aluminum Lower Receiver. It’s a good looking, durable set that’s crested by a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail.

Each uses BRO’s SPEC15 BCG (bolt carrier group) that has a salt nitride bath coating. Each 16” barrel is 4150 Chromoly fronted by an A2 birdcage-style flash hider. Both use a low-profile carbine-length non-adjustable gas block.

So here we come to the one difference between the “Slim” and “Fat” models: their handguards. Both feature a BRO 12” Made in USA handguard with prominent BLACK RAIN lettering along the flanks and latticework on the diagonal surfaces.

The “Slim” model features a SUPER SLIM PROFILE handguard with a 1.35” inner diameter, flank MAGPUL M-LOK slots and 3 QD accessory points.

The “Fat” model is 1.75? wide inside, has 6 QD accessory points, and has integrated machined MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails along the top accompanied by short 4-slot Picatinny rails on both front flanks in front. Keeping weight down is a clever design with some of the top Picatinny rail slots in front, some in back and none in the middle. The rear slots integrate nicely with the Picatinny rail atop the upper receiver. The totality provides ample room for accessories.

These two models weigh about 6 pounds 6 ounces to 6 pounds 8 ounces. Apart from the handguard and weight, once again, everything else on both models is the same.

In each case, the rear is brought up by a boot-shape matte black Mission First Tactical MFT BATTLELINK Minimalist Milspec Stock. This Made in USA component is 1.75” wide, 5.22” tall and 7.1” long. It weighs just 5.8 ounces keeping the entire gun lightweight and easy to tote. The stock has multiple sling points with single point mounting, an ambidextrous quick detach sling mounting point and an upper section that’s designed for enhanced cheek weld. In back is an angled non-slip rubberized buttpad that works even with body armor.

Also for each, the trigger guard’s convex ventral surface is gloved finger-friendly. It fits neatly between the flared magwell in front of it and the GI grip behind. Inside is a standard curved MIL-SPEC GI trigger. It has little play and breaks cleanly. The grip has texturing on the sides and vertical grip serrations in back. The grip includes an integrated beavertail for increased comfort.
