The classic Browning Bar Mk II semi-automatic rifle is fast and accurate. It enjoys a pair of current production year variants including the BAR MK II Safari and the upgraded BAR MK II Safari with BOSS which stands for Ballistic Optimizing Shooting System.

This sporting autoloader spans 243 Win, 308 Win, 270 Win, 30-06 Spfld, 25-06 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag calibers. There is splendid Turkish walnut for both forend and stock, a sporter profile hammer forged steel barrel that backs to a machined steel receiver that’s drilled and tapped for scopes. Both the barrel and receiver are polished blued. The integral sling swivel studs are also steel.

Let’s first look at the BAR MK II Safari. It’s in short action 22” and long action 24” length barrels and overall lengths of 43” and 45” respectively. The shorter barrel gun is available for 243 Winchester, 308 Winchester, 270 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield. This group ranges from 7 pounds 6 ounces to 7 pounds 14 ounces in weight. The longer one is 25-06 Remington, 7mm Remington Mag, 300 Winchester Mag and 338 Winchester Mag; these range in 8 pounds to 8 pounds 3 ounces in weight. In all cases, length of pull is 13.75”, drop at comb is 3/4” and drop at heel is 1 1/8”. The 7mm Remington Mag, 300 Winchester Mag and 338 Winchester Mag are 3+1 capacity while all the rest are 4+1 semi-autos. And these are fed by detachable box mags that feed up through the hinged ventral floorplate.

Beyond the pleasing dimensions are attractive features and characteristics. The receiver is decorated. The chamber is chrome plated for durability. The rounded forearm and traditional stock are glossy smooth and engagingly grained Turkish walnut. There’s excellent 18 LPI checkering in pennant surrounds where the hands will fall. The alloy trigger is gold plated while the alloy trigger guard is decorated underneath by the gold Browning Buck Mark. The gun has a bolt lock and a cross-bolt safety at the trigger guard’s rear that reveals red when in “fire” mode and that a gunsmith can reverse for left-hand use. You get a nice, gently contoured, black recoil pad in back.

The BAR MK II Safari with BOSS has four caliber options. The short action 22” barrel 270 Win and 30-06 Spfld and the long action 24” barrel 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag. They’re largely the same as their aforementioned non-BOSS siblings. The key difference is the radial ported muzzle brake that is backed by a micro-adjustable lug nut that’s easily adjustable for tighter groupings. The combination is 2” long. The muzzle brake is credited with a 30% reduction in recoil.
