The Browning BLR Gold Medallion is a premium 4+1 detachable box magazine lever-action available in .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmore, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield and .300 Winchester Magnum. This 2021 Shot Show special includes perhaps everything you’d reasonable want in something with luscious heritage looks improved by state-of-the-art manufacturing and quality.

BLR is short for Browning Lever Rifle. This gun practically screams upscale. The precision button-rifled barrel is made of heat-treated chromoly steel. It features a precision crowned muzzle that protects the rifling and is made by Miroku in Japan. Miroku machines the barrels individually and checks interior bores for straightness with air gauges, etc.

The gun’s gloss will catch your eye. The barrel is gloss blued. The receiver is gloss-finished aircraft-grade lightweight aluminum and drilled and tapped for optic mounts. It also gets a blued finish that’s then further enhanced by high relief engraving with GOLD MEDALLION lettering in gold. Inside is a multi-lug locking bolt and a rack and pinion lever-action. The travel moves with the lever to decrease finger pinches. In back is a four-position folding hammer indicating full-cock, half-cock, folded hammer position or fired position.

Browning uses a resplendent Grade IV/V walnut with 18 LPI cut checkering in pennants for both to the forearm and stock. The forearm has a Schnabel bulb in front for a more comfortable grip and better control, and then Browning used rosewood for the forend and pistol grip caps. This darker wood is set apart with brass spacers from the lighter walnut. The totality looks great.

These guns come with adjustable iron sights. The gold bead front sight is dovetailed into the elevated ramp sight post. In back you get a square notch screw-adjustable rear sight. The stock is beautiful too. It’s backed by an excellent Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. The stock’s silhouette includes a straight and level check with a 1” drop. Thus, both drop at cheek and drop at comb at 1”.

The detachable box magazine is most important. This bottom-loading is standard for modern semi-automatics, but it eschews the usual lever-action tube magazine configuration. So, the gun’s profile is very different, and the barrel stands out more. More than that: it permits multiple magazines that can be quickly swapped out, and one can use the modern pointed bullet calibers rather than the flatter ones usually seen in lever-actions.

Let’s examine the differences in specifications. The first three have 20” barrels. Length of pull is 13.75” and weight is 6 pounds 8 ounces.

The .270 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield have 22” barrels. They are 43” overall. Length of pull is 14.25”. These weigh 7 pounds 4 ounces.

And the .300 Winchester Magnum is literally in a class by itself with a 24” barrel. Browning lists overall length, length of pull and weight as the same as the 22” models but more likely it would be 45” overall, have the same length of pull and weigh about 7 pounds 12 ounces.
