The Browning BLR takedown models embody extraordinarily clever engineering. They easily break down without tools simply via a join lever. Unlock it, and the BLR’s barrel and forearm assembly separate easily from the gun’s receiver assembly with a 90-degree twist. Reverse the process to reassemble the gun and lock it together, which, incidentally, also uses a locking lug to lock the barrel into the receiver.

There are nine primary BLR takedown models and dozens of SKUs spanning 16” to 24” barrels and sixteen (16!) calibers. The sizes cluster into 16” length barrels (overall length 34”), 18.5” (OAL 36.5”), 20” (OAL 40”), 22” (OAL 42” or 43”) and 24” (OAL 45”). They are either 4+1 capacity for standard ammo or 3+1 for the magnum ammo.

Depending on barrel length, action length, materials, etc., they weigh 6 pounds 8 ounces up to 7 pounds 12 ounces.

Here are a few examples of the many BLR takedown models. The BLR Black Label Takedown, 16" Barrel can be had in .223 Rem or .308 Win. It lacks sights, but it has a long Picatinny rail atop the receiver and half the barrel and then two shorter ones flanking each side of the forearm. Moreover, the barrel is fronted by a pronged flash hider. Two variant models of this feature 18.5” barrels: one sports a flash hider while the other doesn’t.

The 20” barrels include .450 Marlin, .22-250 Rem, .222 Rem, .223 Rem, .243 Win, .308 Win, .358 Win and 7 mm-08 Rem. Next, the 22” barrels include .270 Win, .270 WSM, .30-06 Springfield, .300 WSM, .325 WSM and 7 mm WSM. Finally, the 24” barrels include the .300 Win Mag and 7mm Rem Mag.

The last BLR takedown ended production in 2016. The models vary by stock design (curved, straight or Monte Carlo), stock and forearm material (walnut or green laminate wood), finish (blued barrel and receiver vs. stainless steel barrel and receiver), barrel length, and whether or not they include either a flash hider and/or an accessory rail, etc.

All have an ultra-smooth action lever and a trigger assembly that moves with the lever. They have aluminum receivers with side-ejection ports, are drilled and tapped for scopes, have long serrations grooved along the top of the receiver, horizontally serrated hammers and more.

The button-rifled barrels feature muzzle crowns. They are machined out of heat-treated chrome moly steel. At back is a thick recoil pad. The triggers are luxuriously gold plated, wide and vertically grooved with a 4.5 pound pull pressure.

These takedown models are as accurate as the standard models and the uninitiated won’t even know that these guns come apart unless someone shows them.

All use detachable box black polymer magazines that protrude just a bit from the ventral surface. The magazines are offset fed and, depending on ammunition, tip the scales at 4.8 to 8.0 ounces.
